Task 4 The Camera shutter speed – Shutter speed and creativity
Shutter speed controls the length of time the light enters your camera.

Shutter speed 1/40 F stop 16 ISO 200 – blurred moving skier, slow shutter speed

Shutter speed 1/450 F stop 5.6 ISO 200 – Stop the action, fast shutter speed

Shutter speed 1/40 F stop 16 ISO 200 – blurred moving skier, slow shutter speed

Shutter speed 1/30 F stop 16 ISO 200 – Panning
1.1,2.1,2.2 For this assignment I used my FujiX100F camera with a 23mm lens. I used this one as I wanted to capture shutter speed and the movement of skiers in the mountain, this camera is the most light weight to take with me. I would use a low ISO and narrow aperture of F stop 16 mainly, as the mountains are so bright with the white snow. I could decrease F stop slightly as there was some shady/tree bits that we could go through. I would keep the shutter speed at around 1/30, 1/40 when capturing the panning and a slow shutter speed. And to stop the action I would increase the shutter speed 1/450. As I was unable to take a tripod with me I would not be able to go too much slower on the shutter speed of 1/30 as it would become to blurry.
3.1,3.2 With the two blurred skiers I had to stop still and then click as soon as they went past fast. As it was impractical to take a tripod up the mountain with me, I tried to nestle myself down so I was sitting solid in the snow. I think the effect was achieved and I tried black and white as well as colour. With my son Charlie I used a slow shutter speed again and tried to achieve a panning effect by skiing alongside him at the same speed. I like the lines in the snow you can see as well as the brush/blurred effect in the trees. It was obviously quite tricky to hold my camera as still as I could whilst skiing, I could maybe have used a hand tripod. Using a high shutter speed I was able to stop the action of Charlie moving with him in focus. The picture was originally a bit darker so I used Lightroom to help highlight the focus and the stopped action. The panning picture gives the sense of moving with Charlie down the mountain and with the slow shutter speed it gives the sense of the skiers moving fast and in the colour photo a mystical effect of almost not there. I gave myself an extra challenge of moving myself on skis so it will be interesting to see how I can capture shutter speed on land standing still next time!
4.1 As I would be moving too on ski’s as well as photographing I had to be very aware of the not only the safety of myself but also the safety of others too. This was also true when I was not moving and I nestled myself in to the snow on the side of the ski run. Had to be very careful not to trip someone up or be too much of a distraction, I tired to do this bit as quickly as possible. A camera strap was an absolute necessity when moving fast.
